Sessions will be in ten, half-hour individualized segments by appointment and will be held at the Northern Outreach Center in Grantsville, Md., the Southern Outreach Center in Oakland, Md., and the McHenry campus.

In Composition/Songwriting for the Music Enthusiast, students will learn various compositional techniques and develop an approach to creating new compositions. Students will also develop a basic understanding of music notation software and should be able to discuss various aspects of composition, including form, instrumentation, melody, harmony, rhythm, meter, and dynamics. As a pre-requisite: students must have a fundamental understanding of music theory and be proficient on an instrument. Prior to registration for these courses, students will need to meet with the instructor to discuss his/her proficiency. Piano Studies and Composition/Songwriting are being instructed by local composer and musician, Dr. Sean Beachy of Grantsville. He earned his undergraduate degree in applied music with an emphasis in piano from Alderson-Broaddus College. He also has earned a master of music degree in composition from Shenandoah University and a doctor of musical arts degree in composition from WVU. He is also the church organist and A/C Coordinator at Frostburg United Methodist Church.

Voice Lessons is designed for individual studies in the training of vocal activities related to singing, for all ability levels. Beginning students will learn correct posture and breathing, tone production, diction, sight singing, notation reading, ear training and general principles of vocalizing. Intermediate and advanced students will develop their vocal technique, sight singing ability, and performance quality through appropriate vocal exercises and literature. All students will sing a variety of genres including classical pieces, musical theatre, art songs, folk songs and pop/rock. Students preparing for college entrance auditions will memorize and apply the International Phonetic Alphabet and perform songs in Italian, French and German.

The age range for this course is seven years old to adult. Sessions will be in ten, half-hour segments by appointment and will be held at the Southern Outreach Center in Oakland. The instructor for this course is Leah Shaw. She will also be instructing piano studies as well. She is a classically trained coloratura soprano, but frequently performs songs in the genres of musical theatre, pop/rock and jazz for weddings and music venues. She is an accomplished pianist and also plays a variety of woodwind instruments.

Before moving to Garrett County, Shaw was employed as a music teacher in Anne Arundel County Public Schools for eight years. She also had a private studio in which she taught voice and piano lessons.
